A remarkable journey comes to an end, but with immense pride.
Our Zinc Football Academy’s impressive debut run in the inaugural AIFF U-17 Women’s Youth League concluded in the semi-finals, as we went down 0–2 to Nita FA after a hard-fought 90 minutes of football in the rain.
The match began on even terms, with both sides showing intent but struggling to find the final breakthrough. Our young tigresses took some time to settle into rhythm against a strong and well-organised Nita FA side from Odisha. While ZFA relied on their trademark direct attacking play, Nita FA controlled possession well, building patiently through midfield and effectively neutralising ZFA’s forward threat… an attack that had netted 18 goals in the previous four matches.
Nita FA’s pressing game also stood out, not allowing ZFA to play freely or find spaces easily. Despite a few promising moments, both teams went into halftime with the score at 0–0.
The second half followed a similar pattern initially, though ZFA returned with greater intensity and urgency. However, it was Nita FA who broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, shifting the momentum.
ZFA pushed hard for an equaliser, but the momentum was disrupted by two rain interruptions in the second half. To add to this frustration, a goal in the 56th minute, which would have levelled the score, was disallowed by the referee.
Despite continued efforts and attacking intent, the rhythm never quite returned for ZFA. Then, in the 80th minute, Nita FA capitalised again to double their lead and effectively seal the match.
It was a tough end for our young and determined ZFA side, especially after such a strong run in the tournament. On a day where things didn’t go their way, the team still showed resilience and fighting spirit until the final whistle.
While the defeat stings, this campaign has been a valuable learning experience and a statement of intent. From dominating the group stage to reaching the semi-finals, the girls have showcased their talent on the national stage.
This may be the end of this journey… but it’s only the beginning of many more to come.
